BELGRADE - French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said he was in Belgrade to "turn a new page" and reaffirm the friendship with Serbia and build new partnerships with the country.

"We want to turn a new page together," Macron said at the Nikola Tesla Airport after unveiling with Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic a plaque marking the official start of modernisation works at the airport, to be carried out by French concessionaire Vinci Airports.

No French president visited Serbia in 18 years, which is too long a period of time, Macron said.

He said his delegation included artists, cultural workers and economists and that this indicated France wanted to turn a new page in bilateral relations in a geopolitical context.

"Our ties with your country are very important," he said, noting that the common past, as well as the future, would be discussed during the visit.

"I came here to see you, your government and entrepreneurs, as well as to speak to the entire Serbian nation and to say how much we respect Serbia and how great a friendship with Serbia France is cherishing," Macron said.

This is a special year - one that marks 180 years since the establishment of France-Serbia diplomatic ties, Macron said, noting that the Serbs and the French had fought together for freedom in the Great War.
