BELGRADE - An increasingly apparent politicisation of the EU is obstructing the European integration of the Western Balkans, a Belgrade Security Forum panel titled Regional Security and the Retreat of Liberalism in Europe was told Wednesday.

Patricia Greve, a researcher at the University of Toronto, said the EU enlargement process was overshadowed by internal politicisation in Europe.

On average, the European public is ambivalent when it comes to further enlargement, she said, citing the results of her research.

She added France's blocking of the start of accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania had been an attempt by European leaders to demonstrate a commitment to the process of reforming the EU.

Aliaksei Kazharski, a researcher at the University of Bratislava, said the Eurasian Economic Union was a political organisation that was presenting itself as an economic one.

He said the EAEU could not be of assistance to Serbia in terms of rule of law and that it did not have a particular significance for the Serbian economy.

Michal Onderco, a professor at the University of Rotterdam, said the European Commission had the power to assess budgetary affairs but that it had failed to deal with structural financial problems.
