BELGRADE - In 2018 and 2019, Serbia was the region's absolute leader in terms of new renewable energy projects, says Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic, adding that amendments to the law on rational energy use will soon be tabled to the parliament.

Speaking at the first Innovation Day hosted in Belgrade by Schneider Electric, he said the energy strategy and its development were based on energy efficiency and on improving the "energy mix" by introducing renewables and raising their share in the total energy consumption.

Serbia is trying to catch up with developments in digitalisation and the technological revolution that is underway, including in the energy sector, he said Thursday.

With 400 MW of new wind power capacity and around 100 MW from other renewable sources, Serbia is the absolute regional leader when it comes to new projects in the field, he said.

"It is a trend we will continue," he said, adding that new technologies and solutions were necessary to enable Serbia to reduce energy consumption further and more quickly.
