BELGRADE - SMEs are the drivers of the economy and must get better access to financing as well as begin to implement innovative solutions and keep up with digital transformation trends to be more competitive, a business forum organised by USAID was told Thursday.

The goal of USAID and its Cooperation for Growth project is to help companies in the SME sector to become more competitive, remove hurdles to development and achieve business growth, the participants of the forum, titled SME is MVP, also said.

US Ambassador to Serbia Anthony Godfrey said SMEs were the drivers and the pillar of economic development and that they generated two thirds of Serbia's jobs and revenues.

Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia President Marko Cadez said representatives of SMEs must keep up with trends in digital transformation and implement innovation and know-how to make their companies competitive.

He said Serbian SMEs faced the problem of insufficient access to financing and that this was a trend in other countries as well.

"Implementing innovative solutions is the other problem," Cadez noted.

The Belgrade forum was attended by over 250 representatives of leading SMEs.
