BELGRADE - Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic announced on Thursday the Serbian government had adopted an integrated energy and climate plan under which 45 pct of the country's electricity should come from renewable energy sources by 2030.
Djedovic Handanovic said the plan marked the beginning of a new stage in the development of the national energy sector, which she said should boost the security of power supplies, raise the share of clean energy sources and increase the level of environmental protection.
"By adopting the integrated plan, Serbia has obtained a strategic document that complies with the European vision when it comes to decarbonisation of the energy sector and represents a kind of road map for Serbia in the energy transition. The plan is adapted to the characteristics of our energy sector and the imperative of our citizens and businesses being able to count on secure supplies at all times," Djedovic Handanovic said.
"The integrated plan focuses on investments in renewables, with around 3.5 GW worth of new solar and wind power plants to be on the grid by 2030, meaning that nearly one in every two megawatts of generated power will come from clean sources," she said.
Measures under the plan also include intensive investments aimed at boosting energy efficiency across all sectors, higher use of renewables for heating and cooling and gradual electrification of transport, the Ministry of Mining and Energy said in a statement.
