Macut: Situation in Serbia's energy system under control but we must be rational

BELGRADE - Serbian PM Djuro Macut said on Friday the situation in the national energy system was under control, but urged the citizens to consume electricity rationally in view of a prolonged heat wave in the country.

"Macut stated that our country currently has enough electricity, and the competent institutions – Elektroprivreda Srbije, Elektromreza Srbije and the relevant ministry monitor the situation on a daily basis and take all necessary measures to ensure a stable supply," a government statement said.

"The Prime Minister emphasised that we must be responsible and realistic because the prolonged heat wave, extremely low water levels and increased electricity consumption pose a serious challenge not only for Serbia, but for the entire region.

According to him, hydroelectric power plants are operating under difficult conditions due to reduced inflows, and electricity production is under additional pressure.

He stressed that the next twenty days will be particularly important and appealed to citizens to use electricity rationally.

This, he explained, does not mean that anyone should give up basic needs or comfort, but that we should all avoid unnecessary consumption together."

"The state will do everything to ensure that citizens do not feel the consequences of these unfavourable weather conditions," Macut was quoted as saying.
