BELGRADE - In the years to come, Serbia will keep increasing its share of renewable energy sources while looking after the stability of the energy system and the financial and social sustainability of energy transition, says Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Dubravka Djedovic.
Djedovic said this during a conversation with International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Director-General Francesco La Camera.
The parties said the region of southeastern Europe had excellent potential for power generation at competitive prices but that, despite the significant investments made to date, this was still insufficient for a successful green transition.
Djedovic noted that Serbia was an IRENA co-founder and that, besides active participation in the organisation's assembly meetings, it was interested in expanding cooperation aimed at transferring knowledge, experiences and new technologies in the field of renewable energy sources.
She said Serbia was adopting strategic documents in which renewables occupied "a significant place in ensuring greater energy security to Serbia, as well as in our aspirations to achieve carbon neutrality while following the goals set by the EU."
"We are particularly interested in expert cooperation in the field of renewables, where information provided by IRENA about capacities and investment costs and the experiences of different countries and regions is especially important to us," Djedovic said.
Noting that IRENA had massive presence in southeastern Europe, La Camera offered expert and technological assistance to Serbia in defining instruments for detecting and mapping renewable energy potentials, already provided to several other countries.
He said IRENA was also interested in supporting the process of defining specific steps for implementation of short-, medium- and long-term plans.
