NOVI SAD - Novi Sad Mayor Zarko Micin received Israeli historian, Nazi hunter and honorary citizen of Novi Sad Efraim Zuroff on Monday to discuss the importance of cherishing a culture of remembrance of significant historical events.
Zuroff is on an official visit to Serbia as a member of a delegation led by Serbia's honorary consul in Israel, Aleksandar Nikolic, an official statement said.
Micin noted that Novi Sad was a place of joint suffering of Serbs and Jews and that the city was committed to commemorating all important dates.
"We strongly support initiatives such as this one and we will strive to continue to work on cherishing a culture of remembrance and cooperation with international partners. And as I said on April 25, on the 81st anniversary of the deportation of Novi Sad Jews to infamous death camps, our word must be the shield of truth," he said.
Zuroff highlighted the importance of preserving the truth about historical events, especially regarding the Holocaust, and warned of the danger of historical revisionism.
On Tuesday, Zuroff will address a conference titled Genocide - A Shared Story of the Serbs and Jews in the 20th Century, hosted by the Svetozar Miletic Foundation and the Centre for Social Stability at the Sheraton Hotel in Novi Sad.
