BELGRADE - Serbian opposition MPs said on Tuesday the June 8 local elections in Kosjeric and Zajecar had been held in unequal conditions, resulting in a victory for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

At a press conference outside the parliament building, New Democratic Party of Serbia leader Milos Jovanovic said the elections had demonstrated that the opposition and all those who were against the current government must act together and should secure better electoral conditions before parliamentary elections.

Speaking to reporters in the parliament building, National Movement of Serbia President Miroslav Aleksic made the claim that the SNS had misused resources to pressure voters and buy votes and that, as a result, "one cannot speak of freely expressed will of the citizens in the Kosjeric and Zajecar elections."

He noted that the opposition would keep calling for elections but that it did not expect President Aleksandar Vucic to "give them easily."

New Face of Serbia MP Milos Parandilovic said the fact the SNS had won the Kosjeric elections by a one-seat margin showed the polls were "the beginning of the end" of the present government.
