BELGRADE - Speaking to reporters after Monday's session of the extended Collegium of the Serbian Armed Forces chief of general staff, President Aleksandar Vucic said Serbia must raise the level of its defence capabilities as the current global situation was one where law, justice or rules did not exist.
That is hard to understand and accept, but we need to accept it, Vucic said at the Banjica 2 army barracks.
"We are doing all this for the sake of Serbian citizens. It is not about the vanity of countries and about who is stronger and who is not strong enough - being protected, safe and secure is a matter of the top interests of the Serbian citizens," the president noted.
He said Serbia had changed its military doctrine and noted that, under that doctrine, the Serbian army must be incomparably stronger, but did not elaborate, citing confidentiality.
"In the past 10 years, especially in the past year, we have done much to modernise the army," Vucic said.
Being a UN member state with guaranteed territorial integrity no longer means anything due to the behaviour of big powers, which respect principles as they see fit and come up with new principles, Vucic added.
