BELGRADE - Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic met with Cai Dafeng, vice chairperson of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, who is heading a Chinese delegation that has visited Serbia for a conference of the Chinese diaspora on promoting a peaceful reunification of China.

Brnabic said the timing of the conference, held in Belgrade on Wednesday, reflected its significance as it was extremely important to remind of the fight against fascism and separatism and of respect for the norms of international law and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.

Welcoming Cai, Brnabic said she was pleased to have an opportunity to host the Chinese colleagues.

She noted that parliamentary cooperation with China was important for Serbia, and noted that Serbia-China relations were at an all-time high thanks to Presidents Aleksandar Vucic and Xi Jinping, and that a comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries had been deepened during Xi's historic visit to Serbia in May 2024, when a record-high number of agreements and documents were signed, paving the way for further development of cooperation, an official statement said.

The meeting was also attended by Serbian Deputy Parliament Speaker Marina Ragus, who heads a Serbia-China friendship group in the parliament.

It is important that committees of the two parliaments step up their cooperation, she said, noting that doing so would be a logical sequence of events.

She added that Serbia was extremely proud of the Belgrade Declaration, adopted at the conference.

Cai thanked Brnabic for her support and efforts in cherishing and promoting the Sino-Serbian friendship, as well as for her support in hosting the successful conference.

He agreed that parliamentary cooperation was extremely important and that future joint work would help to enhance it.
