Macut: EU Serbia's clear path and goal, we need national consensus on that

BELGRADE - Serbian PM Djuro Macut said on Wednesday EU membership was Serbia's clear path and goal and that, in the past several months, the Serbian government had made a clear commitment to support the EU path, but that it would be good to also reach a national consensus on the matter.

"If we want to go further, to get where we already belong, we must establish a national consensus on something, for instance, on joining Europe. We are in Europe - I keep saying that - but our disunity in terms of views and our attempts to show that we are different when it comes to joining Europe are something that is not alright, in my opinion. All European countries that have joined the EU have made a national consensus," Macut told Tanjug in a New Year's interview.

Serbia is too small on a global scale to be able to dictate policies, but it is very important in regional terms, he said.

"To ourselves, we are the most important, but we are also very strong in regional terms. That is what is important when it comes to the Western Balkans and the entire accession system. We are definitely an indispensable country. We have economic stability on an absolute scale. Our economy is the most stable, not only in the Western Balkans, but also beyond it, if we take a look at the context of other countries. We are one of the fastest-growing economies. That is de facto true. Absolutely no one can contradict that," Macut said.
