BEIJING - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Monday that, under the Constitution, elections would have to be called within 90 days if he were to resign.

Vucic, who is on an official visit to China, told Serbian reporters in Beijing that "it is known how everything works" and that, if and when he resigned, elections must be called within 90 days, and noted that, unlike some other people, he did not want to remain in his post until the end of his life.

"And I will not be cutting short my term, like they falsely claimed that (former President Boris) Tadic cut short his term, and he did not - he resigned. I will resign, because that is what the Constitution says, I will not be cutting short my term. Once I resign, we will go to elections in 90 days - we will see if they will be parliamentary or presidential elections, and that's it. There is no major philosophy there," Vucic said.

When the president of the Republic resigns, elections must be called within 90 days, and the role of the president and the presidential powers are transferred to the parliament speaker, he added.
