BELGRADE - Serbian PM Djuro Macut met with Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza in Belgrade on Monday to discuss the organisation's work and noted that his government was interested in assisting Belgrade's bid to become the regional centre of Interpol.
"Macut said that the work of such offices can contribute to raising the level of regional coordination of Interpol, given the importance of that organization in the fight against various types of crime that have an international character," a government statement said.
"According to him, Interpol is not and should not be politicised, but rather in the service of public international security, and profiling through regional offices is its future, given that each region has its own specificities.
Urquiza stated that Serbia’s role in Interpol is crucial, especially when it comes to identifying routes for various categories of smuggling.
He pointed out that this is why Serbia does not only have a significant position in the regional sense, but also in the international network of Interpol, considering Serbia’s engagement in numerous activities of that organisation," it also said.
