WASHINGTON - Serbian Ambassador to Washington Marko Djuric met with US Congressman Robert Aderholt on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

Aderholt is a member of the Helsinki Commission.

Djuric conveyed to Aderholt Belgrade's gratitude for US Congress support for launching a strategic dialogue between Serbia and the US and to the Open Balkan initiative, whose further activities will be discussed in more detail at a conference of the southeast European branch of the Prayer Breakfast group in Belgrade this month, with support from the Serbian parliament and the Congress of Serbian-American Friendship.

According to a statement released by the Serbian embassy in Washington, Djuric said Serbia remembered an outstretched hand of friendship and had not forgotten that Aderholt had been one of the initiators of a Congress resolution calling for an end to violence and attacks on Serbian Orthodox religious sites in Kosovo-Metohija during a March 2004 pogrom there.

Djuric also said Serbia highly appreciated Aderholt's engagement regarding the Western Balkan region, which he noted had become especially prominent when, together with a group of other Congress members, Aderholt called for sending aid to Serbia and its neighbours following catastrophic flooding in May 2014.

The parties also reviewed other issues of interest to the region.
