BELGRADE - The Serbia men's national football team held European champions Spain to a goalless draw at home on Thursday evening to take a point from the two sides' UEFA Nations League A Group 4 Match Day 1 encounter.
Spain, whose starting lineup included eight players who started the EURO 2024 final, dominated the midfield from early on but the first chance fell to injury-hit Serbia in the 6th minute as Sasa Lukic's shot from the edge of the penalty box went over the bar.
Spain had their best chance in the first half in the 32nd minute, when Serbia goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic produced an excellent save to deny Ayoze Perez a goal.
Two minutes later, Luka Jovic went one-on-one with the Spain goalkeeper following an Andrija Zivkovic assist but fired wide of the goal from about six yards out.
Lamine Yamal missed two great chances for Spain in the 71st and the 75th minute.
The match at Belgrade's Rajko Mitic Stadium was attended by more than 20,000 spectators, including about fifty Spain supporters.
In the other Group 4 game, Denmark beat Switzerland 2-0 at home.
On Sunday, Serbia will play Denmark away and Switzerland will host Spain.
