Serbia overcomes Spain at European water polo championship in Belgrade

BELGRADE - The Serbia men's national water polo team defeated Spain 12-11 (3-3, 3-2, 3-2, 3-4) in a Group C second-round clash at the European Championship in Belgrade on Monday evening.

Strahinja Rasovic led the scoring for Serbia with four goals, Vasilije Martinovic scored three and Milos Cuk netted two goals.

Alberto Munariz stood out for Spain with four goals and Unai Biel scored two.

At the beginning of the last quarter, Serbia's Dusan Mandic picked up a red card for a foul on Alvaro Granados and, as a result, the hosts were a man down for four minutes.

Earlier, the Netherlands defeated Israel 19-11 in the other Group C game.

Serbia, which defeated the Netherlands 18-16 on penalties in the opening round on Saturday, is on top of the group table with five points, and is followed by the Netherlands with four, Spain with three and Israel with zero points.

In the last game of the group stage on Wednesday, Serbia will face Israel and Spain will take on the Netherlands.
