BELGRADE - Commenting on a call for sanctions against Serbian top officials, made in the European Parliament by some Serbian opposition parties, Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on Wednesday they had called for sanctions against their own country and its people, and noted that sanctions would isolate Serbia and have a negative impact on its image and economy.
She said a claim the opposition parties were calling for sanctions against President Aleksandar Vucic for shaking hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin was a media spin and that the call for sanctions against Vucic, Serbia and its people was due to the fact they were unable to beat Vucic in democratic elections.
"It has nothing to do with shaking hands with Putin. I have not shaken hands with him but they are calling for sanctions against me, too," Brnabic said on Pink TV.
