NEW YORK - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Wednesday evening he had had a "good, but not easy" discussion with US State Secretary Marco Rubio about US sanctions on Serbia's Russian majority-owned oil company NIS and that the sanctions might be delayed only one more time, for one month, but that he was not optimistic.
Speaking to reporters in New York after addressing the UN General Assembly session, Vucic also said he had officially invited US President Donald Trump to visit Serbia.
"I would say the tone (of the meeting with Rubio) was friendly, the discussion was sincere, open, extremely substantial. Through the State Department, I officially invited President Trump to visit Serbia. We discussed all important topics. The discussion about the sanctions on NIS was not an easy one and I asked for a one- or two-month delay, but I just want to tell you it will not be simple," Vucic said.
He said there was a "visible" US determination not to give up on implementing the sanctions.
"So, we still do not know what their final decision will be, but in case we get one month, and I do not believe we will, it will be due to this discussion, and it will be for only one month, and then other problems will be ahead," Vucic said.
