BELGRADE - The Republic of Serbia and the Serbian Orthodox Church signed on Friday a MoU on cooperation on the establishment of a St Sava Serbian Orthodox University.
The MoU was signed by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije and Serbian PM Djuro Macut at the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate in Belgrade.
The signing ceremony was also attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Minister of Education Dejan Vuk Stankovic.
In early April, the Serbian government adopted the text of the MoU in view of a need to constantly advance the education system and improve its quality level in keeping with the principles of knowledge, good upbringing and morality.
In a statement, the government said the university would be established with the aim of cooperation between the authorities and the Church in the field of higher education being based on shared responsibility for development of knowledge, safeguarding fundamental values and cherishing the cultural and religious heritage.
