Prosecutors seek custody for man suspected of violence during opposition protest

BELGRADE - The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade on Wednesday proposed custody for Ivan K, aged 19, suspected of violent conduct during a protest staged by the opposition Serbia Against Violence coalition outside the building of the national election commission two days ago.

Earlier, the man appeared before prosecutors on suspicion of pelting solid objects at the building on several occasions, attempting to remove a protective barrier, hurling insults at police officers and pushing one of them.

The suspect, charged with the criminal offence of violent conduct at a sports event or a public gathering, denied any wrongdoing, the Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

It proposed custody for the suspect for fear that he might repeat the offence in the near future.
