Eris COVID-19 subvariant confirmed in Serbia

NOVI SAD - The Centre for Virology of the Vojvodina Institute for Public Health said on Wednesday the presence of the Omicron EG.5 (Eris) COVID-19 subvariant had been detected in the territory of Serbia's northern province.

In a statement, it said the subvariant had been detected in a genome analysis of the SARS-CoV-2 virus through new-generation sequencing on a sample of biological material secured on August 30 as part of routine COVID-19 supervision in the territory of the South Backa District.

Earlier this year, the World Health Organisation said Eris - first reported in February - posed no major threat to public health.
