BELGRADE - Serbia's Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic announced on Tuesday she would meet with Hungarian officials next week to discuss opening a Belgrade-Budapest high-speed rail line to traffic and added that passenger traffic on the route would likely begin in late February or in March.
"I do not like to make statements before I have official information, but the situation is that it will happen in late February or in March," Sofronijevic said on Prva TV.
She said the high-speed rail line would be very important for travel in this part of Europe and that, on some sections, trains would be able to run at the speed of 200 kph, shortening journeys between Belgrade and Budapest to under three hours.
Sofronijevic added that a Belgrade-Budapest-Vienna railway corridor would also be discussed with the Hungarian officials.
