BELGRADE - Serbian Parliament Speaker Vladimir Orlic said on Tuesday in Brussels Serbia had become an engine of development in the Western Balkans and had a vital interest in diversifying its energy supplies.

Orlic was speaking at a conference on the Western Balkans that is traditionally attended by European People's Party members.

He said Serbia expected 4.5 bln euros of FDI this year.

At a panel on energy security and decarbonisation in the Western Balkans, Orlic said Serbia saw its energy security as an inseparable part of national security and as an important precondition for continued economic development and overall progress, an official statement said.

Despite the current geopolitical challenges, Serbia has succeeded in maintaining continued energy supplies and remains vitally interested in diversification of energy supplies, additional investments in energy infrastructure as well as in quicker and more efficient development of capacities based on renewable energy sources, he said.

With EU support, Serbia is implementing major energy connectivity projects, ensuring even more stable and more secure energy supplies to its citizens and businesses alike, Orlic also said.
