BELGRADE - Serbian PM Djuro Macut on Friday inspected works underway at Belgrade's Nikola Tesla Airport and announced it would get three new gates by the start of EXPO 2027.

Macut noted that the airport was not only a regional air transport hub but also a symbol of a modern, developed Serbia.

"Three new gates and three new airbridges will be opened. The Nikola Tesla Airport has seen great expansion with nine million passengers served last year and already more than four million this year, which is, in fact, a good indicator of development, with a high percentage of growth in terms of the number of passengers passing through our airport," he said.

Macut, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Aleksandra Sofronijevic, Air Serbia CEO Jiri Marek and Nikola Tesla Airport executives inspected works on expanding the airport's gates.

The developments come as Serbia prepares for EXPO 2027, and the airport will have an important role to play, the PM said.

"But not only the Nikola Tesla Airport, but also Air Serbia, which has begun its transformation in the past years and has also greatly increased its number of flights. This is also a good sign that our national airline is a dominant company flying to all continents," Macut said.

The Nikola Tesla Airport absolutely represents a regional hub, from Vienna to Athens, he noted.
