BELGRADE - Serbian Deputy PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Tuesday there was no reason for early parliamentary elections in Serbia and that those who were calling for them did not understand the elections could be "the end of their dream."
"Serbia needs political stability and continued economic development. In my opinion, there is no reason for any early parliamentary elections. The government has a stable parliamentary majority," Dacic said on Pink TV, commenting on the student protesters' demand for a dissolution of the parliament and early parliamentary elections.
He said he was no proponent of any early elections, but only of regular ones.
Dacic added that, since the onset of the protests, he had been saying they were not about an independent movement that would fight only for the fulfilment of the students' demands, but that they were a political movement that would ultimately set certain political objectives.
"Do you remember how they were initially saying they have nothing to do with politics, that they do not even want the government replaced, and how they kept distancing themselves from the opposition, and so on? However, there are definitely people there who want to use this situation as a screen for eliminating the negative connotations certain opposition political parties have," Dacic said.
