BELGRADE - For more than 24 hours now, there has been no EU response or reaction whatsoever to deeply disturbing manifestations of fascism in Croatia, Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on Monday in a reaction to a concert by Croatian singer Marko Perkovic Thompson.
Noting that the Zagreb concert had been attended by more than 400,000 people while Croatia has a population of under four million, Brnabic noted that, however much she might be shocked there was a country in Europe or anywhere else where nearly half a million people attended events at which Nazi slogans were chanted enthusiastically - 80 years after the world had witnessed the most monstrous fascist and Nazi crimes - she was equally shocked by a lack of adequate reaction, or any reaction at all, from the EU and EU institutions.
"On Saturday evening, hundreds of thousands of people were chanting the 'For Homeland Ready' ustasha salute just 100 kilometres away from one of the most monstrous Nazi camps - Jasenovac. Tens of thousands, and according to some reports, more than one hundred thousand Serbs, Jews and Roma were brutally killed in that camp. It was also the only concentration camp for children on European soil. They were all killed as the 'For Homeland Ready' salute was shouted," Brnabic posted on X, noting that the salute was equivalent to the Nazi 'Sieg Heil' salute.
The EU reaction must be determined and clear and there should be no place on the European continent for such dangerous, hateful rhetoric, Brnabic noted.
"It represents a threat to us all and does not contribute to peace in the region, but does exactly the opposite. The silence is too loud and we will not consent to it," Brnabic noted.
