BELGRADE - Serbian Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic met with UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas Miroslav Jenca in Belgrade on Wednesday, and noted that Serbia contributed to safeguarding of international law, above all, by engaging in peacekeeping operations.

That way, the cooperation with the UN is constantly enhanced, Gasic added.

Pledges of new contributions, made at ministerial meetings in Ghana and Germany, have confirmed Serbia's commitment to bolstering peacekeeping efforts worldwide, an MoD statement quoted Gasic as saying.

Under UNSCR1244, KFOR is the only force whose presence is allowed in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo-Metohija, Gasic noted, adding that KFOR was the guarantor of peace and security for Serbs in Serbia's southern province.

The parties noted that the presence and activities of UNMIK alongside KFOR troops were exceptionally important for ensuring the security of the Serbs and other non-Albanians and that UNMIK needed to continue to operate in Kosovo-Metohija.

Jenca thanked Serbia for its commitment to promoting peace and dialogue and to maintaining stability in the region.

He also noted that Serbia's contribution to peacekeeping operations was highly appreciated and recognised in the international community, and said he hoped it would be continued, especially when it comes to engagement of Serbian Armed Forces troops in multinational operations.
