BELGRADE - A street named after Mexico was ceremonially opened in the Belgrade Waterfront district on Friday.

Serbian Deputy PM and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, Belgrade City Assembly President Nikola Nikodijevic and Mexican Ambassador to Serbia Carlos Felix Corona unveiled a street name plate reading "Mexican Street."

Dacic said naming a Belgrade street after Mexico was a concrete step connecting two countries that would next year mark 80 years of their diplomatic relations.

"This street is an homage to the friendship and cooperation with Mexico," Dacic said, noting that Serbia exceptionally appreciated Mexico's principled position when it comes to safeguarding Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"Mexico has always voted in line with international law when it comes to safeguarding our integrity and sovereignty, and when it comes to the so-called Kosovo's entry to UNESCO and Interpol," he said.

Corona thanked Dacic and city officials for their cooperation and for supporting an initiative to name a Belgrade street after Mexico.

"This is a historic day for the citizens of our two countries, and especially for the citizens of this city," he said, noting that the move was an important symbol confirming the friendship between Serbia and Mexico and that the street would become historical heritage strengthening the relations between the two peoples.

"Every name in our city carries a message, and this street carries the message of friendship between Serbia and Mexico. I believe we will raise the cooperation between our two cities to a higher level in the near future," Nikodijevic said, noting that a street in Mexico City bore the name of the Serbian capital.
