KOSOVSKA MITROVICA - The newly-elected mayors of nine Serb-majority municipalities in Kosovo-Metohija, who are Srpska lista representatives, took office at constitutive sessions of the municipal assemblies on Friday.
The municipalities are Gracanica, Strpce, Novo Brdo, Partes and Ranilug, as well as North Mitrovica, Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubin Potok, located in the north of the province.
In the four northern municipalities, the new mayors took over from ethnic-Albanian mayors elected in the April 2023 elections, which saw a turnout of just 3.5 per cent and followed in the wake of a departure of Serb representatives from the provisional institutions in Kosovo-Metohija due to Pristina's unilateral and escalatory moves and failure to comply with agreements.
During the tenure of ethnic-Albanian mayors in the four municipalities, Serbian institutions were forced to move out of their buildings, street names were changed and signposts written in Cyrillic were removed.
Srpska lista mayoral candidates won in the October 12 local elections in all ten Serb-majority municipalities and the party also won the majority of the seats in the municipal assemblies.
The constitutive session of the Klokot municipality, where Srpska lista won in run-off elections, will be scheduled at a later date.
