BELGRADE - Azerbaijan's Ambassador to Belgrade Kamil Khasiyev said on Wednesday Azerbaijan-Serbia bilateral ties had reached the highest level of strategic partnership and that economic cooperation was developing successfully as well, and that Azerbaijan looked forward to a visit by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in May.
"It is my pleasure to point out that friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Serbia have developed successfully and reached the highest level of strategic partnership. Our economic cooperation is also developing successfully and even has great potential, and this project is a testimony to that," Khasiyev said after Serbia signed a commercial agreement with the Azerbaijani company Azvirt to design and build an expressway that will connect the Backi Breg border crossing with Srbobran via Sombor, Kula and Vrbas.
He said an official visit to Belgrade by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev had been an important turning point in the history of bilateral relations between the two countries.
"The first meeting of a Strategic Partnership Council, chaired by the two presidents, was held and, during it, a series of important documents taking our partnership to a higher level were signed. Serbia is one of Azerbaijan's closest friends and its dependable strategic partner on the European continent. In the past several years alone, the Serbian economy has been exhibiting sustainable growth in spite of global geopolitical factors and negative trends in the world economy. We are fully convinced that Azvirt, one of Azerbaijan's leading construction companies, is also contributing to successful economic development of friendly Serbia," the ambassador said.
He also said he believed Vucic's upcoming visit to Azerbaijan would help strengthen the strategic partnership further.
"Our strategic partnerships will be strengthened and deepened," he added.
