Patriarch: Srpska expression of Serbs' centuries-long aspiration to live in freedom

BANJALUKA - Republika Srpska is an expression of the centuries-long aspiration of the Serbs to live in freedom, in justice and in peace with everyone, Patriarch Porfirije of the Serbian Orthodox Church said on Tuesday during a holy liturgy that marked the start of Republika Srpska Day celebrations in Banjaluka.

"That is why it is important that we have a love for God and for each other," the patriarch said, congratulating Republika Srpska on its day.

Republika Srpska Day is celebrated annually on January 9, St Stephen's Day.

St Stephen is the patron saint of Republika Srpska.

The patriarch was welcomed by a large number of people who had gathered outside the Orthodox Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Banjaluka despite a cold morning.
