Indictment for Novi Sad railway station tragedy returned for supplementary probe

NOVI SAD - The Higher Court in Novi Sad on Friday returned an indictment against 13 people for the November 1, 2024 deadly overhang collapse at the city's railway station for supplementary investigation.

The court's non-trial chamber decided that the matter needs to be clarified further to examine the groundedness of the indictment, the court said in the statement.

It gave the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Novi Sad three days to order a supplementary investigation into circumstances that require additional explanation.

Fourteen people were killed on the spot in the tragic accident and two of three others who were severely injured later died in hospital, succumbing to their injuries.

Ten of the 13 people indicted for the tragedy are in custody and two - including former Serbian Railway Infrastructure Acting Director General Jelena Tanaskovic - are under house arrest, while former Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic has been released after a few days in custody following a successful appeal by his attorney.

The indictment, raised in December, said "former Serbian Railway Infrastructure acting director general J T, former minister of construction, transport and infrastructure G V, former acting assistant minister A D and former Serbian Railway Infrastructure director general N S are indicted on suspicion of committing a serious crime against general safety under Article 288, Paragraph 2 of the Penal Code, in conjunction with the criminal act of causing general danger under Article 278, Paragraph 3 in conjunction with Article 2 of the Penal Code."

Nine more people, identified with the initials S N, M J, LJ M M, M S, J S M, Z S M, D J, M G and D T were also indicted on suspicion of committing a serious crime against general safety under Article 288, Paragraph 2 of the Penal Code in conjunction with the crime of illegal and improper execution of construction works under Article 281, Paragraph 1 of the Penal Code.
