BELGRADE - The Assembly of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) elected astronomer Zoran Knezevic as its new president on Thursday.
Seventy-five assembly members voted for Knezevic, while his rival, composer Svetislav Bozic, garnered 33 votes.
After taking a degree in astronomy at the Belgrade Faculty of Sciences and Mathematics in 1972, Knezevic obtained a master's degree in 1976 and a doctor's degree in 1989.

He is considered worldwide as a top expert on small space bodies.
At the proposal of Italian astronomers, Asteroid 3900 was named after Knezevic.
His work is associated with the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade, at which he has held various prominent posts in the past and served as its director from 2002 to 2014.
