BELGRADE - The new building of the Belgrade Center train station at Prokop was opened on Friday at a ceremony also attended by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
The building - as well as the station itself, whose construction began almost five decades ago - was opened on October 20, the day of Belgrade's liberation from Nazi occupation in WWII.
Serbian PM Ana Brnabic, Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic, Finance Minister Sinisa Mali, Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Sapic and representatives of Serbian Railways and contractors were also in attendance.
Works to construct the 6,250 sq m building at Prokop began in early August 2022.
Belgrade Centre has effectively been the city's main train station since July 2018.
"Today, on October 20, we are opening the building in honour of Belgrade and Belgrade's freedom, in honour of our freedom-loving city," Vucic said, adding that Belgrade and Serbia would become completely different once the capital's first metro line was inaugurated in 2028.
