GUCEVO - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Thursday he had had a discussion with army officials in Gucevo, western Serbia, earlier in the day about reinstating compulsory military service, which he noted would last 75 days and could be introduced in about a year.
"We will probably make that decision (to reinstate compulsory military service). The estimates and discussions are still not finished at this time," Vucic told reporters during a tour of a display of arms and equipment used by Serbian Armed Forces special troops, noting that women would be able to serve voluntarily.
He said compulsory military service would last "two months plus 15 days of drills or, in other words, 75 days."
"I think that is the minimum anyone can give to their country," he added.
He said pay to be received during military service would not be insignificant and that an agreement had been reached to renovate army barracks in various parts of Serbia.
