BELGRADE - Commenting on a call for sanctions against top Serbian officials, made in the European Parliament by some Serbian opposition parties, FM Marko Djuric said it reflected the opposition's nervousness over failed plans to change the government through street protests.
"I do not quite understand that political move. If there is something we Serbs do not like, it is those who go to foreigners as telltales talking about the situation in their own country. I think that shows several things. That shows nervousness over the fact that plans to turn things around in the country in the streets are not going as envisioned, and that erodes not only the reputation of the ruling party, but opens up space for those who are ready to pounce at every opportunity to criticise Serbia and portray it as a non-democratic state," Djuric said.
That is not a democratic or a legitimate method, he told Happy TV.
"What we see here is a scenario of a fight to get to power at all costs. We must adhere to certain rules and say there can be no political violence, that there cannot be such forms of attacks on our own country through attempts to turn a part of the international community against us," Djuric said, adding that sanctions against democratically elected officials impacted the whole society.
He said the opposition's attempt had backfired as even people who were dissatisfied with the government saw how irresponsible the move was.
