BELGRADE - Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on Wednesday in Belgrade Hungary and Serbia advocated the adoption of a peace plan for Ukraine.

"Together with the Serbian government, we stand firmly behind the peace efforts of Mr (Donald) Trump," Szijjarto told reporters after a meeting with Serbian FM Marko Djuric.

He said Hungary believed that, unless the peace plan was adopted, the situation would be worsening permanently.

Szijjarto, who is in Belgrade for a meeting of Central European Initiative (CEI) FMs, said that, unfortunately, some European politicians were advocating war and undermining the peace plan.

He said that, for that reason, both the Serbian and the Hungarian governments supported the peace efforts with more determination than ever before.

Szijjarto said the time had come to end the war and that Europeans should not be paying for a war they had nothing to do with.

Szijjarto: Hungary wants Serbia in EU but some countries are blocking its accession

BELGRADE - Hungary's position is that Serbia's EU accession is in the interest of Europe, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said in Belgrade on Wednesday, noting that some European countries were blocking Serbia's aspirations to join the EU as soon as possible.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Serbian FM Marko Djuric, Szijjarto said Europe would benefit greatly from Serbia's EU accession as the country would contribute to Europe's development.

Szijjarto said there was a country that was at war and definitely not prepared for EU membership as it had a "corruption machinery" at the highest state level that would destroy the economic system if that country was to join the EU

"Some countries want to get Ukraine into the EU, which would represent a threat to us," he said, adding that, on the other hand, Serbia brought new opportunities, new progress and development.

He also said Hungary would not leave Serbia without energy supplies and that technical details of energy assistance to Serbia would be agreed in Belgrade later in the day.
