Vucic: Gendarmerie important for Serbia's defence

BELGRADE - Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday the Gendarmerie, a special police unit, was significant not only for the police, but also for the defence of the entire country, and noted that it was important to keep its ranks filled to a high percentage.

Vucic attended a demonstration exercise carried out by Gendarmerie troops at the Lipovica base near Belgrade.

In the exercise, they stopped a bus and took control of the vehicle after entering it through the windows.

Vucic commended the ability displayed by the Gendarmerie.

"Literally, they did it in three seconds. They are incredibly fast and capable of doing this. For us, the Gendarmerie is a unit that is important not only for the police or the Interior Ministry, it is also important for the defence of our country as a whole," Vucic said.

He noted that the Gendarmerie had always been there to defend, protect and safeguard the country.

"Therefore, besides the special units we have in the army, the Gendarmerie was, I think, the most successful unit at a Dubai competition alongside Kobre (Cobras). So those are our best two units - a military and a police unit," Vucic said.
