BELGRADE - In terms of defence and security, the goal of the new Serbian government will be to strengthen the defence industry, boost the development of the Serbian Armed Forces and improve the living standards of professional soldiers, PM Designate Milos Vucevic said in the parliament on Wednesday.
Presenting his programme to MPs, Vucevic said the government would propose the introduction of four-month compulsory military service.
"That period of time could provide us with a trained soldier and, certainly, with a safer, more secure country," Vucevic said.
He said reinstating compulsory military service was no preparation for war but for protecting the country.
Vucevic explained the move was aimed at ensuring Serbia had generations who knew how to defend their country and their families - their mothers, fathers, wives and children.
He said Serbia was firmly committed to peace and to forging and strengthening partnerships with all counties but that, in today's very complex geopolitical environment, defence capabilities needed to be strengthened.
"Recognising the significance of the ability to accept and capitalise on new technologies, the future government will continue intensive investments in the Serbian Armed Forces," Vucevic said.
