NOVI SAD - Celebrated Serbian former footballer Vladimir Jugovic was unveiled as new director of sports at FK Vojvodina Novi Sad on Wednesday.
He will be in charge of the club's sports department, player selection and signings and further development of the Vojvodina youth academy.
Jugovic has previously served as club President Dragoljub Zbiljic's adviser for sports affairs.
At a press conference, Jugovic said he had accepted an offer to take the new post after recognising the energy and clear vision of Vojvodina's top executives, and added that he saw his new role at the club as a major sporting challenge.
"Serbian football has given a lot to me, and I feel an obligation to try to give something back to football," Jugovic said.
Zbiljic said Jugovic's appointment as director of sports marked the start of a new stage in which Vojvodina wanted to raise its ambitions to a higher level.
He said Vojvodina wanted to establish a continuity of campaigns in European club competitions and feature in the UEFA Europa League and the Champions League, as well as to play in Europe in the second half of the season.
Zbiljic added that Jugovic had been his top pick for the position and noted that financial terms had played no decisive role in the deal.
After winning the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup with Red Star Belgrade in 1991, Jugovic went on to play for European greats such as Sampdoria, Juventus, Lazio, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Monaco.
With Juventus, he won the Champions League in 1996, as well as the Intercontinental Cup and the UEFA Supercup.
